How to Clean a Cat Water Fountain Pump (Step by Step)
Share
A cat water fountain only works as well as its pump. Over time, hair, food bits, slime, and mineral scale build up inside and slow the water flow or make the pump noisy. Cleaning it takes about ten minutes. Always follow your fountain's manual too, since designs differ.
What you need
- A small, soft brush (an old toothbrush or a pipe cleaner works)
- Mild, unscented dish soap
- White vinegar, for mineral buildup
- A towel
Step 1: Unplug first
Unplug the fountain before touching the pump or putting your hands in the water. This is the most important step.
Step 2: Empty and take it apart
Pour out the water and remove the top, any filter, and the pump. Most pumps sit at the bottom of the reservoir on suction cups and lift out gently. Note how the parts fit so reassembly is easy, or take a quick photo.
Step 3: Open the pump housing
Most small fountain pumps have a cover that pops or twists off to reveal the impeller, a small magnetic rotor with fins. Remove the cover and gently slide out the impeller. Don't force it. Check your manual if it doesn't come out easily.
Step 4: Clean every part
- Scrub the impeller and the inside of the housing with the soft brush and a drop of dish soap. Hair often wraps around the impeller shaft.
- Push the brush or a pipe cleaner through the water intake and outlet.
- For white crusty scale, soak the pump parts in a mix of equal parts white vinegar and water for 15 to 30 minutes, then scrub.
- Rinse everything thoroughly in clean water so no soap or vinegar smell remains. Cats are sensitive to smells.
Don't put the pump in the dishwasher unless the manual says it's safe.
Step 5: Clean the bowl and reservoir
Wash the reservoir and any spout or top with warm soapy water, scrub corners where slime collects, and rinse well. Many stainless steel parts are easy to clean, and some are dishwasher-safe. Check yours.
Step 6: Reassemble and test
Put the impeller back, snap the cover on, return the pump to its spot, and refit the filter and top. Fill with fresh water above the minimum line, then plug it in. Running the pump without enough water can damage it.
How often to clean
- Pump: commonly every two to four weeks, or sooner if flow slows or it gets louder.
- Bowl and reservoir: about weekly.
- Water: top up daily and change it fully every few days.
- Filter: replace on the schedule the manufacturer recommends.
Homes with several pets or hard water usually need more frequent cleaning.
Signs your pump needs attention
- The flow is weaker or uneven.
- It hums, rattles, or buzzes more than usual.
- The water looks cloudy or the bowl feels slimy.
Make cleaning easier
Keep the fountain away from the food bowl so kibble doesn't fall in, and away from the litter box. Using filtered water can slow scale buildup in hard-water areas.
